Drone Laws 2021 Guide

Everything you need to know about the new drone laws

    Product Details

The A2 “Certificate of Competency” (A2 CofC) refers to the drone training and qualification needed to be able to operate drones in the A2 Subcategory of the OPEN Category under the new UAS regulations. We recommend before choosing the A2 CofC that you read through our handy Drone Regulation guide for a complete overview of the latest UK drone regulation changes.

Each of the 4 modules in this course includes reading material, in-depth videos from our trainers and interactive quizzes to track your progress, all of which can be done at your own pace.

    Your success is our goal

We truly believe in the future of the drone industry and we want drone training to be as easy as possible to access across every sector, this is why we’re offering our popular A2 CofC online course for free, all you need to pay is the exam fee (£49 + VAT).

There’s a lot of people across the UK talking about ignoring the new regulations, or how this is just a “money-maker” for drone training providers.  This isn’t good for the industry, or for those that fly responsibly.

By making our online A2CoC course free we hope more people will take up the course and join us in taking the UK Drone Industry to the next level.

You’ll be learning at Coptrz Academy

Bella Randall, Arcadis

“Coptrz have done an amazing job of putting everything online, it really works. It was so easy to learn, the webinars really helped me as I would learn the modules and then watch the webinars. So, they solidified everything for me. Doing the theory test was really smooth – even on Zoom! I felt really confident going into it and I knew everything that I needed to know in order to pass.”

Pass the Final Exam

Time to put your hard work to the final test. Pass the 30 question multiple-choice exam to receive your Certificate of Competency.

The A2 CofC is the training course and qualification needed to operate in the A2 Subcategory of the OPEN Category under the new UAS regulations. The course consists of four modules which you can access via our online Learning Portal.
Once you’ve completed your online training and some guided or self-study practical flight training, you’ll complete a multiple-choice Theory Exam (30 questions).
The A2 CofC course covers theory such as the basic principles of flight, operating in congested areas, how to avoid collisions, battery safety, and how to operate depending on a range of environmental factors.
The A2 CofC qualification lasts for five years before you need to renew it.

Throughout your journey with Coptrz Academy, you’re likely to come across our trainers Dan Wilson, Duncan Hewitson, Harry Crawford and Adam Watkin either in person or online.

Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people. Find out more about our team of experts.

“The A2 Certificate of Competency grants Remote Pilots the authorisation to fly closer to uninvolved persons, and also operate within congested areas.

The course is currently delivered remotely via the COPTRZ E-Learning Portal, with the inclusion of regular interactive quiz’s and videos to help reinforce understanding. We also run regular virtual classrooms, capped to small groups which allow our instructors to deliver content directly in an environment where questions can be answered live.

There is an element of self-guided practical flight training and a remote examination at the end of the course.

For any remote pilot flying a sub-2kg aircraft, this certificate is a must-have!“

The Drone Laws have changed – here’s everything you need to know…

You’ve got your A2 CofC, but now what?

We enrol all new students onto our A2 CofC course on Fridays.

Enquire below to speak to a member of our team or easily purchase the course online.

  • As an active PfCO holder, can I get free training through Coptrz?

Anyone who undertook their PfCO or COP-SU course with us after September 2019 will get their A2 CofC for free. The course will be fully online. Get in touch to find out more information if you think this applies to you.

  • Can I still operate on PfCO?

Yes, as long as it is valid. Ensure you renew it!

  • How do I take the A2 CofC exam from home?

Our exams are invigilated online by a third party using their own remote support software.

The invigilator will check your surroundings via your webcam to ensure you are alone and aren’t using any notes to cheat on the exam, but you won’t be able to physically talk to them, you can only communicate through the chat.

You’re not allowed to have any materials present, including pen and paper.

Please note: If your internet is provided by Talk Talk you will need to turn off the HomeSafe setting as this blocks the remote support software.

  • Can I take the exam on my phone?

Unfortunately not. To sit the final exam you will need to have access to a computer with a webcam and a working microphone.

Most computers have webcams built-in but if yours doesn’t, you can use an external USB webcam.

  • What else do I need to sit the A2 CofC exam?

The only thing you need to have with you on exam day is a form of valid photo ID such as a passport or driver’s license.
