Powered by Flir™ and demonstrating exceptional clarity, the Zenmuse XT series is a high-tech industrial piece of kit to go on any suitable drone such as the Matrice 600. MP4 video formats make the high definition thermal imagery easy to export and interpret, even to view in real-time for instant response.

Reliable thermal imaging is now possible thanks to the serious upgrades presented by the Zenmuse XT series:

The upgraded model, the Zenmuse XT Advanced Radiometry camera, has even more to offer. Thermal imaging can be detected down to the last pixel, with a unique tap-to-temperature process to help identify the exact temperature of any pixel. External factors such as background temperature can also be added in for increasingly precise readings - it's a really flexible, data-heavy tool! A particularly nifty feature is the temperature alert threshold - automatically activating when a set temperature is detected. Looking for a missing rascal? Found him! Need to make sure your landfill isn't overheating? Hot spots found!

Which Zenmuse XT is right for my business?

If you are looking for a cost effective solution that is ideal for emergency services (police, fire and rescue) then the standard version of the XT is suitable. This is because it is capable of recognising body heat and as a central spot measure for temperature on-screen.

The standard does not give you live Radiometric data though, so if you are looking for an industrial use then the Radiometric version of the XT thermal camera is advised. The Radiometric version allows you to see hot and cold areas with better accuracy. All you have to do is tap the screen and it will give reading for that pixel. if you want to be alerted when hot or cold thesholds are met, the Radiometric version can do this for you.

- 336: Lower price, good performance in most applications
   Lenses: 6.8mm, 9mm, 13mm, 19mm
- 640: Higher price, more detail at long range & on smaller objects 
   Lenses: 7.5mm, 9mm, 13mm and 19mm

Frame Rate
- 9Hz: OK in most applications 
- 30Hz: Preferred in dynamic FPV flying, smoother framerates when flying actively

Lens Option
- Narrow FOV: When objects of interest are far away / harder to search for 13mm, 19mm 
- Wide FOV: When flying lower / more situational awareness is important 6.8/7.5mm, 9mm

Things to know about Thermal

  • DJI Zenmuse XT is sensitive in 8um to 12um waveband (Long Wave IR)
    • Your eyes are senstive in the 0.4um to 0.7um waveband
  • Thermal cameras see apparent temperature differences in a scene
  • Everything around us either emits, absorbs, or reflects in the thermal bands
  • They do not see visible light
  • Some items that are transparent in visible are opaque in thermal, for example glass
  • Soome items that are opque in visible are transparent in thermal. for example smoke
  • Thermal does not see though walls or clothing
    • It sees the temperature of the surface of the item
    • However, the surface temperature can be effected by what is behind it
  • A 640x480 thermal sensor is considered Hi-Resolution
    • Pixels are 10-20x larger than those found in visible sensors due to physics
  • Mostly everything you know about camera optics apply to thermal optics
    • f/#, range depends on focal length, etc.

Important Specs to Understand

  • Temperature Sensitivity
  • Usually expressed as NEDT (Noise Equivalent Delta Temperature) in units of Degrees Kelvin
  • Similar in concept to S/N (Signal to Noise) in audia systems
  • Tells you the smallest temperature difference the system can detect
  • The lower the number, the bette rthe system
  • The DJI Zenmuse XT has an NEDT (or Sensitivity) or 0.05
